Chris Doten is an consultant on technology and human rights issues who has worked in over 40 countries across Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to design and deploy appropriate technology to support democracy and human rights. Chris has worked closely with a range of major and startup technology companies to help incorporate global perspectives and human rights considerations. He has innovated new scalable solutions for digital development, and collaborated with a range of major and startup technology companies to help incorporate global perspectives and human rights considerations. Chris began his career working with technology hands-on first as a systems administrator and network security engineer, and then later developing political web software used in US Senate and Congressional campaigns.
As the first Chief Innovation Officer at NDI (National Democratic Institute) Chris spent a decade designing and implementing digital democracy programs which applied context-appropriate tech to reach more citizens, track political processes, and protect dozens of elections. Chris has worked with commercial and open-source software to build and adapt tools to the needs of users around the world.
Chris specializes in the challenges of cybersecurity and internet freedom in closed societies and has trained hundreds of at-risk digital rights defenders from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe. Having previously worked for the campaigns of John Kerry, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton, Chris is skilled at the pragmatic application of digital communications, data and campaigning tools in organizing, advocacy, and governance.
Chris earned a BA in Computer Science and History from Carleton College and a Masters in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University
